I just got back from my Alabama adventure. I got to meet Ewan and watch HIM film for 5
hours. The whole time, I was the only one there as it was out on a rural road
in far Northeast Montgomery. They literally let me walk around the set the whole
time. I stayed in Prattville. I arrived last Friday night. On Saturday morning
(after watching the first hour of "Moulin Rouge" on HBO--a very good sign
for the day to come), I left to stake out Wetumpka which was about 20 minutes
away. When I got there, some of the streets were blocked off. I went to an officer
who said they had been there that morning and had just finished filming. I told
him I was from Texas
and wanted to see something. After being in shock that I had come all that way
for this, he informed me that they would not be back there until next weekend
for a big parade scene. However, He told me the road they were going to now
and gave me back road directions to get there. I took off right away and eventually
came upon them in the middle of nowhere on a rural 2 lane road by two houses,
open fields and a cow pasture. I went and parked with a few other cars and as
I walked back to where the trailers and trucks were, I noticed the police had
now blocked off the road in several directions from traffic. I had just gotten
in. I was walking right past a red car (within 2 feet) with equipment attached
to it and people all around it. As I passed I saw someone behind the wheel and
then stopped to take a second look. It was our Ewan!! This whole scene was to
involve him and Steve Buscemi in the car making a
getaway from a botched bank robbery.
(This location was also supposed to double for Texas!!) Tim Burton, the director,
was also just a few feet away overseeing everything. Once everything was set,
they took the car, which was attached to a truck carrying crew and cameras and
started down the road.
They continued to do that for 3 hours. About every 20 minutes or so they would
bring the car back right where I was and turn it around for its next run. Then
everyone from makeup to lighting would run over and check things out on the
car. After about 10 minutes they would take off again. Well after a couple trips
back up the road to turn around, I noticed Ewan and Steve Buscemi were looking
out the windshield everytime they came back right in my direction (I was the
only person/thing standing there.) After three times of this I decided to see
if they were looking at me and I gave a quick wave and smiled. Ewan waved back!!
He had seen me!! After 3 hours of this they had to make a lens change so they
would have about a 25 minute break.
They towed the car further up the road. I decided this was my chance. So I walked
up the road and waited. Ewan got out of the car
and started to make his way to his trailer. I called out "Ewan" and he turned
and came over to me. (My husband still can't believe I called him over and especially
by his first name. I tried telling him he really isn't the "Mr. McGregor" type.)
I told him hi and that I was the one on the corner and he said "Yeah, I saw
you " and smiled. I told him I had driven in from Texas and he said "Really?"
--slightly surprised. I'm sure he didn't know it was 14 hours away. I asked
him if he would sign something for me and he said sure. I brought out my hardback
Moulin Rouge book and he signed the front page. (Of course I fumbled to find
my marker like a total idiot. Oh well) I then asked if he could sign something
for my two boys who were Star Wars fans and he signed two cards for them. I
then asked if I could take a picture with him, but he said he couldn't because
he was in makeup and costume and that they didn't like them to do that. (They
were filming the stuff as reported on Jan 30th in the "Ewan News" that was rained
out on the previous Wed.
There is
a photo there of him in the costume I saw him in. He looked exactly like that
only with a slight orangish tinge to his face
from the makeup.) I said thanks anyway.(I had gotten a lot of pictures with
the car plus I had gotten to watch Ewan film for 5 hours!)
He told me thanks again and bye. He then walked to his trailer. He was back
in the car about 15 minutes later and was angry about something. (One of the
crew members later said things had started getting a little testy as everyone
was starting to get tired.
Anyway they continued to film that same way until dark --about another 1hr.
and 45 mins.)
Then the shoot started to break up and that was it........
