I was an extra
last week in Big Fish and got to see Ewan! I didn't get to talk to him, though.
As an extra, we were given a list of things we couldn't do, like take pictures
or ask for autographs. I want to go back just as an observer and try to get
a picture. But anyway, I was in a 1950s scene as part of an angry mob shouting
at the mayor about a problem. Ewan is at the back of the mob and says he'll
take care of the problem. When he speaks, the crowd parts and he walks up to
the mayor. We did the scene over and over, so to get to his place in the back,
Ewan kept walking by me.
I was surprised at how small he is. He isn't really short, it's just movies
make people seem so larger than life. Anyway, the second
day we did a shot where Ewan has taken care of the problem and is presented
a key to the city by the mayor. Our job was to cheer and applaud. Between takes,
Ewan stayed in front of our group and checked out the ladies. He winked at one
girl. I was only 10 feet away from him, and it seemed like he was staring right
at me for some time. I think he just liked unnerving the girls by staring at
them intensely. The usual reaction was for the ladies to whisper to each other.
There were about 50 of us in the scene, and I didn't
hear the ladies say his name, I think they just thought he was good looking.
I was amazed how many people had no idea who he was. There were drama students
in the group, and they knew who Ewan was. One was saying how he'd like to go
up to Ewan and shake his hand but was afraid he'd start something with the crowd.
They played the Moulin Rouge soundtrack that morning when we were getting hair
and makeup done, and no one around me knew it was Ewan singing! I was having
to educate people the whole time. After the scenes, they would shuttle him off
so he never hung around.
People in the town were telling me that he's living there and is seen shopping
and eating in Montgomery. He even bought a
motorcycle at the local Harley Davidson. Even though I didn't get to talk to
him, it was cool seeing him at work and just being there
in the whole movie-making environment.
It was fun!
